Alternative Model of the Year Contest

MODELS of a different kind are putting their stamp on the traditional beauty contest.
A new North-based competition is seeking to unearth the next top alternative model who wears their piercings and tattoos with pride.
Organiser Kieran Martin set up the Alternative Model of the Year contest to offer a fresh approach to beauty pageants with a unique style and methods of judging.
Kieran, 20, of South Shields, South Tyneside, said: “I launched it back in August and only had a couple of months to turn it around for the first contest late last year.
“I think a lot of people were definitely glad to see it come back again this year because it’s a really unique concept.
“It’s the first time I have ever heard of anything like this and that’s why I decided to do it.”
Contestants aren’t judged on just looks, but also on personality and style.
Both men and women can enter in age categories ranging from 13 to 25 and up. A winner is chosen in each group with an overall winner being crowned at the Alternative Model of the Year.
Last year’s beauty queen was Daria French from Newcastle who went on to sign with a local model agency – shortly after working alongside the US model Kandy K, who is often seen on the front cover of Tattoo magazines all over the world.
The 19-year-old Northumbria University fashion student said: “Last year people weren’t sure if it would be a success but it was and it seems like this year a lot more people are joining.
“Alternative modelling has got quite big because it’s a lot more interesting taking pictures of people with tattoos, piercings and different coloured hair.”
There are a series of auditions being held in coming months before the contest at Banana Studio in Newcastle on. To see the full list and to apply, visit http://www.alternative-modelling.co.uk
